Biography
Cass is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) at Red Sands Psychiatry, where she specializes in serving patients with trauma and PTSD along with associated concerns, such as flashbacks, irritability, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, low self-esteem, relationship problems, and adjustment problems.
Cass became interested in psychology very early in life, benefiting from family therapy and discussing psychological theories with her parents, who were both seekers in the Human Potential Movement in the 1960s. She wore many hats professionally, with time spent working as a waitress, administrative assistant, car salesman, and electrician. However, after taking several classes in psychology as an adult, she found a genuine passion for mental health and began to see herself in the role of a therapist.
In her own words:
"The idea of becoming a mental health professional was such a drastic departure from the life I had lived up to that point that it took reassurance from my loved ones and even my own therapist before I committed to that journey. But I am so grateful I did!"
With a passion rekindled and encouragement from those in her corner, Cass went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Southern Oregon University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Writing with a Minor in Psychology. She then earned a Master's in Social Work from Portland State University and a second Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Southern Oregon University.
What fascinates Cass about Mental Health is how absolutely life-changing it can be! She used to believe that people were "stuck with" whatever problems or challenges they had, but the great news is that people can always change for the better. Nothing in this world gives her more joy than to see a client move from despair to success. Cass sees it as a sacred trust to work with people in their most vulnerable moments and is deeply honored to do this work.
Cass is mindful, jovial, and relatable. As a therapist, her work is very client-driven and deeply collaborative. From day one, she'll work with you to establish what you want to achieve and prepare a unique care plan. As needs change session-by-session, so will the care plan. She adopts the concept of Unconditional Positive Regard (popularized by Carl Rogers) in her care and will be an unwavering positive anchor in your corner. Cass firmly believes that every person can transform themselves and their lives; her goal is to understand and support you, wherever you may be, in achieving your goals.
Outside of the office, Cass loves spending time in nature - be it hiking, cycling, or just tanning on the patio. She is an animal lover, especially fond of cats, dogs, or anything fuzzy, and loves to feed the squirrels that frequent her backyard. Cass is also a top-tier bargain hunter who loves shopping for and discovering treasures at second-hand stores.
Ultimately, Cass strives to help as many people as possible by continuing to round out her therapeutic toolkit. She aims to continue to learn and explore different modalities. A few upcoming points of emphasis are receiving more training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help people better understand the sum of their parts and how to create balance, as well as studying Direct Brain Reorienting (DBR) to help clients that have a hard time accessing their emotions.
Her favorite quote is:
"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom."
- Anaïs Nin
